Safety Professional - When did this become a profession?

Greetings Scaffs from around the globe and here at home. This started out to be a rant about how I don't think safety should be it's own profession (and cue the angry e-mails) and I sat back to ponder the roots of the average Safety Professional. In my mental timeline retrace of the possible origins of the Safety Professional I could only come to one logical conclusion about how "Safety and Compliance" could become a stand alone, salaried, I get paid just like everyone else, position. The…

Jim Bridger Boiler Scaffold Wave - Not an Atlantic Scaffolding job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The picture was believed to have been taken at the Jim Bridger Plant in Point of Rocks, Wyoming. This is a CLASSIC example of why diagonal bracing is absolutely critical in all scaffolding applications. This is also a CLASSIC example of why there are professionals in our INDUSTRIES. We have heard rumor that this is an Atlantic Scaffolding job and this is not the case. Atlantic is not on this job site and this is not our scaffold.…

Resumes

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to the new mellenium. As I have posted a job and asked for resumes I have noticed a scary trend. While most of you are computer literate enough to find us and join up, most of you don't have a resume. While I can certainly understand that most people in our industry don't usually ask for resumes when they are manning up a job. We can also use this to possibly get ourselves ahead of the pack and when whoever is hiring you asks " What have you done?" You…

Scaffold Stage Collapses in Italy

Unfortunately there has been another stage collapse in Italy. There were some injuries and maybe possibly even a fatality. Our thoughts and prayers are with the crew and their families. Please add to this blog if you can find any more details about the event.

Tools

I am looking for anyone who has tried the new Wright wrench to see if they like it? If anyone has one or has seen one please post a comment to let the rest of us know if you like it or not. I'm old school and still faithfully use a Tubelox racthet. It has served me well over the last 19 years and I am reluctant to try a new one. Post comments below. …

Welders fall from Scaffold In Sarpy County, NE

This from ScaffMag.com.

Two workers were injured Tuesday morning when they fell nearly 20 feet off of scaffolding at a construction site in Sarpy County.

The two men were both wearing safety harnesses, but one worker hit the ground.

Jared Kirkendall, 27, of Auburn, Neb., was flown to the Nebraska Medical Center with head injuries after his safety harness failed to stop his 17-foot fall, said Sarpy County Sheriff’s Capt. Monty…

Check Out this Gem!!!

Check this baby out! I was in a hotel in St. Joe, MO and walked out in the morning to find this gem. I looked for someone working on it but maybe they decided to go home and think about what they had done.  Check out the super cool ratchet straps.  Look at how close that sucker is to the edge! No locks on the casters,…

Heat!!!

So this posts topic is something we deal with all of the time. Heat! Whether we are working in a plant in the middle of winter, or the side of a building during the dead of summer. Heat is a constant in our industry. Remember to drink plenty of water and lay off the caffeine and the alcohol when you know you are going to be exposed to high temperatures. I know the push back but alcohol is a severe cause of dehydration. It ironically is one of the causes of a…

The thing everybody hates - paperwork. Tips, rants and other rambelings

Yes, I know. I can hear it now. " I love my job but hate the paperwork" For all of you out there in Supervision, you can certainly relate to this statement. While I completely agree with this statement I can also see it from the other side. Tracking a major project when the paperwork from the field isn't right can be a nightmare as well. The thing we need to remember when we sit down to fill out one of the 5000 forms it seems we have to fill out everyday, is that…

New Forum Questions and other rants

I have posted the inevitable question in the Forum section to see what we, as a collective group, think is the best modular scaffold system on the market today. Check it out and vote for your favorite today.

As we are comming to the end of the 2011 Spring Outage season I would like to hear any comments anyone has about how their jobs went. Were the people good? Was the work managed well? Was it more than you expected? Sound…

New Topic posted in the Forum Section!!!

Check out the new posting in the Forum section of the site and sound off on what you think about it. It is a great article from a knowledgeable source from inside the industry on how "common sense" seems to be going out the window. I heard one time that "common sense" had been re-named "good sense" because if it was so common everyone would have it.

The article came from the SIA magazine and if you, and your company, are not…
